Michelada is a popular cocktail south of the border that has recently traveled north. It’s a drink most Americans aren’t familiar with unless they’ve traveled in Mexico or live in the border states. Essentially it’s a cocktail prepared with beer and hot sauce that’s served over ice, and is very refreshing in the tropical heat. It has been touted as a sure-fire cure for hangovers.
1 fresh lime, Key lime preferred
Coarse salt or Margarita salt
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 dash soy sauce
1 dash habanero hot sauce
Freshly ground black pepper
1 12-ounce bottle dark Mexican beer, such as Negra Modelo or Bohemia
Cut the lime in half and rub one half around the rim of a large glass and reserve the other half. Pour the salt onto a plate and dip the rim of the glass in the salt to coat.
Fill the glass with ice, squeeze the juice from the reserved lime into the glass. Add the Worcestershire, soy, and habanero sauce along with a few grindings of the pepper.
Pour in the beer, stir and serve.
